Kentucky Derby 2011

Kentucky Derby 2011
The Kentucky Derby will be on May 7, and women are already shopping for hats to wear to the event. The focus on fashion is just as great as it is on the horses. Elaborate women's hats have become a tradition at Churchill Downs. Although many choose garish and outlandish designs, there are elegant options for women who do not want to look like they are wearing wedding cakes or dead birds on their heads.

These are the top five hats that will make you look stylish, help you stand out in the crowd and still look elegant:

1. Lydia Hat for the Kentucky Derby

Created by designer Christine A. Moore, the Lydia hat costs $425. This black design has a wide brim for extra sun protection and features two ostrich feathers. The feathers can easily be removed for a different look. The top is covered in a black and white silk organza scarf. It drapes the brim and hangs over the side.

Tiered looks are the latest trend for the spring of 2011. The layers on this Kentucky Derby hat will help you look in style. Stripes are also in style this spring, so the silk striped scarf adorning this creation fits well with current fashion.

2. Rachel Hat for the Kentucky Derby

The Rachel hat can be ordered from the Del Mar Hat Company for $310. It is available in three colors and can be customized for a perfect fit. It features a large adjustable brim and has a copper finish that shines in the sun. A large satin bow in brown graces the top, and the company also sells flowers.

This Kentucky Derby hat fits well with the shimmer trends seen for spring 2011. The color comes alive in the light and would look perfect at Churchill Downs. It also provides excellent coverage from the sun.

3. Stacey Hat for the Kentucky Derby

The Stacey hat is designed by Christine A. Moore and costs $237. This red creation also has a wide brim that can be adjusted. Featuring a red ribbon and coque feathers, it is noticeable in a crowd but still elegant. Although I prefer the red color, it can be customized with other shades for the Kentucky Derby.

The red color fits with the spring 2011 trends. It makes a bold statement without looking garish. You can also remove the feathers or add additional ones for emphasis.

4. Something Special Belle Swinger Hat for the Kentucky Derby

The Something Special Belle Swinger hat is available for $58. This is a more delicate design with sinamay straw and a sinamay bow. The Kentucky Derby hat is light blue and features a large matching flower on the side. It is also available in black and coral. Featuring layers of material, it is still lightweight and comfortable.

Sheer and light fabrics are in style this spring, so this design fits well. In addition, the pale blue color works well with current trends of fresh shades. Although it looks delicate, sinamay is actually a stiff fabric that holds its shape.

5. Ladies Liz Hat for the Kentucky Derby

The Ladies Liz hat is available for $155 and is featured on the official race website. Designed by Christine A. Moore and honoring the Susan G. KomenRace for the Cure, this pink hat has a simple design. It is decorated with a pink bow and flowers. The brim can be adjusted.

The hat allows you to bring awareness to fighting breast cancer and still look stylish. Pink is a popular color for spring, and flowers are being added to many styles. The look is feminine with a touch of sophistication.
