Thomas Jefferson |
That’s right, way back in the 1700′s, one of our founding fathers and authors of the Declaration of Independence was born.
He was born in Shadwell, Virginia to Peter Jefferson, a planter and surveyor, and Jane Randolf.
He was the third of ten children.
His nicknames included, The Sage of Monticello, Man of the People, Father of the University of Virginia.
When Jefferson was 29, he married 23-year-old Martha Skelton.
Of his six children with Skelton, only two survived into adulthood.
Although he owned many slaves throughout his life, Jefferson was rumored to have had an intimate relationship with one of his slaves named Sally Hemings and had six children with her.
In 1801, Jefferson became the third President of the United States.
Throughout his time in office, we can thank him in part, for the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expeditions.
