Portal 2 |
The alternate reality game promoting Valve’s new title took another step at 9 a.m. on Friday when the company launched “GLaDOS@Home,” a website filled with progress bars and the names of the 13 indie games that Valve released in its Potato Sack bundle several weeks ago.
“Help release Portal 2 early,” the website says. “Play the 13 indie games in the Potato Sack to reboot GLaDOS.”
So basically, if you give Valve money now, you’ll be able to give it more money earlier than you expected. Brilliant!
The website is keeping track of how many people are playing each game. As more gamers get involved, the bars fill up further; as of this writing, around 20,000 people were playing and the progress bar had barely moved more than a few pixels.
Earlier on Friday, a countdown clock on the Aperture Science website ticked down to 9 a.m. PST. When it finished, the following message appeared on the screen:
09:00 – Hello again.
09:00 – I’ve been waiting a long time for this.
09:00 – I know it’s arriving later than expected.
09:00 – But I have a message for you:
09:00 – April Fools.
09:01 – I’m joking.
09:01 – Seriously, though:
09:01 – You’ve been surprisingly competent at
09:01 – generating electro-chemical energy to jumpstart the system.
09:01 – But now we need raw computational power
09:02 – to speed up the reboot process.
