For the sake of our future, I urge Singaporeans to vote wisely on the grounds of meritocracy, and meritocracy only.
I read with dismay the recent criticism of Ms Tin. Online support for Ms Seah has appeared to be overwhelming, with the number of "Likes" on her Facebook page exceeding that of Ms Tin's.
With Ms Tin's work and grassroots experience trumping that of Ms Seah, I feel it is not fair that Ms Tin gets so heavily criticised when she has proven her sincerity to serve the people by spending several years getting acquainted with the ground.
Ms Seah, an executive at Starcom Media- Vest Group, on the other hand, is just a fresh university graduate with little work or life experience. If she gets lauded as a credible candidate, would this mean any run-of-the-mill university graduate can run for Member of Parliament by joining an Opposition party?
If so, it would be putting to shame the hard work and portfolios of other candidates elsewhere, and would be undermining the meaning of meritocracy.
People say MPs with grassroots experience are dime a dozen and hence Ms Tin's portfolio is not impressive.
But with little experience, how do you really understand the big picture of what residents need and how make the best decision to benefit the most people?
Lastly, there have been many online critics giving their support for Ms Seah simply because she looks "better" than Ms Tin. I thought elections are not beauty contests. Let us judge the candidates by what they have done rather than how competent and pretty they look.
I am not from Marine Parade, nor have I decided yet who to vote for. But I simply do not like to see such mean and unfair comments about Ms Tin on the Internet.
