The Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour is a collection of films from the Wild & Scenic Film Festival held the third week of January in Nevada City, Calif., which is now its ninth year! Wild & Scenic focuses on films which speak to the environmental concerns and celebrations of our planet.
"Films featured at Wild & Scenic give people a sense of place," says tour manager, Susie Sutphin.
"In our busy lives, it's easy to get disconnected from our role in the global ecosystem. When we realize that the change we need in this world begins with us we can start making a difference. Come and see!"
As part of The Music Hall's Wildcard Movie Series, the local showing of the Wild and Scenic Film Festival will feature a selection of shorts that document the splendor of and the challenges facing our planet in addition to the work communities are doing to protect our environment. Featured at the Portsmouth, NH theater are nine films that range from humorous to inspiring to challenging. Laugh as you enjoy a mock-u-mentary following a plastic bag on its 'migration' from supermarket to its final destination in the Pacific Ocean. Be inspired by the magnificent images captured by international conservation photographers. Learn more about the joys and hardships of farming through the Maine-created film "Meet Your Farmer" which chronicles the lives of four farm families.
The Music Hall Programming Coordinator, Chris Curtis, says, 'These fun, beautiful, and evocative shorts will inspire, educate, and move you to change the world! As part of The Music Hall's Wildcard Movie series, the Wild and Scenic Film Festival will conclude with a panel of local experts leading a community discussion and Q&A. The Music Hall is so glad to partner with the Southeast Land trust of New Hampshire for this Earth Day awareness event.'
The Wild & Scenic Film Festival is a natural extension of the Southeast Land Trust's work to inspire people to conserve the region's most important lands and natural resources. Founded in 1980, the Land Trust has conserved nearly 8,000 acres of open spaces in southeastern New Hampshire. "This year we are actively working to protect more than 1,000 acres, including three farms in the Seacoast," explains Brian Hart, Southeast Land Trust Executive Director. "One of our goals is keeping productive farm soils undeveloped and available to grow fresh, local foods." Land conservation is an effective tool to protect water supplies, enable local agriculture, provide outdoor recreational opportunities, and provide local wood products.
About The Film Festival
The Wild & Scenic Film Festival was originally started by the watershed advocacy group, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) in 2003. The festival's namesake is in celebration of SYRCL's landmark victory to receive "Wild & Scenic" status for 39 miles of the South Yuba River in 1999. The 3-day event features over 100 award-winning films and welcomes over 80 guest speakers, celebrities, and activists who bring a human face to the environmental movement. The home festival kicks-off the national tour to over 100 communities nationwide allowing SYRCL to share their success as an environmental group with others organizations. It is building a network of grassroots organizations connected by a common goal of using film to inspire activism. With the support of their National Partners: Patagonia, CLIF Bar, Klean Kanteen, Osprey Packs, Sierra Nevada Brewing and Grsit.org, the festival can reach an even larger audience in tour venues coast to coast.
