Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was looking for a new mentor Friday after former NBA player John Lucas quit as the 25 year old's "life coach," Yahoo! Sports reported.
Russell, who was selected first overall in the 2007 draft, was released by the Raiders in May 2009 and joined forces with Lucas last September to mastermind his bid to return to the NFL.
But Lucas decided to end the working relationship with Russell, who was also mentored by Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, after growing tired of his lack of motivation.
Two sources close to the quarterback said Russell was unable to muster the necessary "desire" to get back into shape and was asked to leave his training base in Houston by Lucas.
"It's just amazing that you could say that about somebody who is 25 years old and just got drafted four years ago," one of the sources said. "But it's been almost a year since he got cut and there's no interest. Even before the lockout, nobody wanted to get near the kid."
