MINISTER George Yeo, whose five-member team is facing off the Workers' Party 'A' team in Aljunied GRC, said he had expected WP to field a 'strong team' and called his opponents 'worthy'.
Addressing supporters on Wednesday after nominations closed at Deyi Secondary School, Mr Yeo said Aljunied would see a 'decisive contest'.
'We intend, the five of us, to win over every heart, every mind in Aljunied GRC. The residents know what we have done, what we have promised five years ago we have carried out,' said Mr Yeo.
He said his team has detailed plans under Aljunied 10 and 'a good track record' to improve the lives of residents.
NTUC assistant secretary-general Ong Ye Kung, who is in Mr Yeo's slate, said the Worker's Party's 'powerful line-up this time is not completely unexpected', adding: 'This will be a very closely fought competition, perhaps a decisive battle.'
Workers' Party chief Low Thia Kiang, making his post-Nomination Day speech, said his team is confident of winning the GRC, where it garnered 43.9 per cent of the votes in the 2006 general election. The PAP won with 56.1 per cent of the votes.
Party chairman Sylvia Lim also said the WP team is determined to make 'a breakthrough' in the May 7 election.
'Your lives will improve if PAP faces a strong opposition in Parliament. We trust your judgement. You are our secret weapon. Vote Workers' Party towards a First World Parliament,' she said.
